Meaning: A way to show contrast 

Example: "Although some claim that environmental issues are just being exaggerated by the media, leading scientists and academics disagree. "  

Q. In twenty years, there will be fewer cars in use than there are today. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? 

Although some claim that environmental issues are just being exaggerated by the media, leading scientists and academics disagree. There is a growing worldwide environmental awareness of the detrimental effects of greenhouse gases and climate change.
